Location

With Alston in the heart of the North Pennines in the North East corner of Cumbria, our guest house is a perfect base for day tripping to the Lake District, the Scottish Borders, Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall Country, the Northern Durham Dales, or the famous Yorkshire Dales.

Owner's Description

All of our rooms are non smoking and offer a complimentary refreshments tray, colour television, radio alarm clock, hair dryer and complimentary toiletries. Our superior rooms also offer a DVD player and CD/radio alarm clock.

Room 1
A comfortable twin room with en suite shower room. The beds are each covered with a Muskoka quilt, these were hand crafted by a relative of the current owners. The room overlooks an 18th Century Grade II Listed home originally built for the Manor's farm manager and our courtyard.

Room 2
Our pleasant single room with en suite bathroom. The bed is covered by the Iris quilt which was hand crafted by a relative of the current owners. The room overlooks an18th Century Grade II Listed home originally built for the Manor's farm manager and our courtyard.

Room 3
This cosy twin room with facility to zip beds together and offer as a double with en suite bathroom. The room overlooks an 18th Century Grade II Listed home originally built for the Manor's farm manager and our courtyard.

Room 4
This bright double room with en suite shower room. The double bed is covered by the Sampler quilt which was hand crafted by a relative of the current owners. The room has striking views over the South Tyne Valley and Alston Moor.

Room 5
A delightful double room with en suite shower room, has dual aspect windows which overlook the Manor's extensive grounds and the South Tynedale Railway station can be seen in the distance. The Railway has a number of steam and diesel engines which run on a regular timetable from March to September, with special events throughout the year including Halloween specials in October and Santa specials in December.

Room 6
An enchanting double room with en suite shower room. The bed is draped with the Bird House Quilt, this was hand crafted by a relative of the current owners. The room looks into the Manor's extensive front garden and the 150-year-old, Wellingtonian, Sequoia tree. With the addition of a travel cot or fold-up bed, this room is suitable for a couple and one child.

Room 7
A cheerful double room with en suite shower room. The bed is dressed with the Jewel Box quilt, which was hand crafted by a relative of the current owners. The room looks into the Manor's extensive front garden and the 150-year-old, Wellingtonian, Sequoia tree.

Room 8 - Derwentwater
An elegant superior room featuring a king -size 4-poster bed with en suite bathroom with heated towel rail. The room looks into the Manor's extensive grounds with Alston Moors to the west and gentle farmland to the east.

Room 9 - Stuart
This charming superior room with king-size bed with en suite bathroom with heated towel rail. Highlighted with a king size quilt named the Pansy Patch, which was hand crafted by a relative of the current owners. The room has a spectacular view looking out over the South Tyne Valley and onto Alston Moor. With the addition of a travel cot and or a fold-up bed, this room is suitable for families.

Things You Need To Know

Well-behaved guest dogs are also welcome, by prior arrangement. A nominal fee of £5.00 per dog, per night will be applicable.

Dogs must be accompanied at all times. Should you wish to leave your dog(s) in your bedroom they must be kennelled. We have specially allocated some of our bedrooms for this purpose.
In cooler weather, dogs can be left in the car. They are not allowed in public areas for the comfort of our other guests.

FROM SCOTLAND
Our guests from Scotland usually strike west and come down via the A74/A74(M). At Carlisle, follow the M6 for one junction from J44 to J43, then take the A69 exit to Brampton, and Newcastle. About 10 miles further on take the A689 signposted to Alston. Follow the A689 through Hallbankgate and Slaggyford onto Alston. Turn left onto the A686. You'll enter Alston over the old stone bridge across the South Tyne river. Stay on this lower road, still the A686, now signposted to Hexham, and Lowbyer Manor is approximately half a mile out of Alston. Drive past the two garages on your left hand side, past the South Tynedale Preservation Steam Railway, round the sharp left hand bend and the Manor is the large white Georgian house set high in its own wooded grounds on the right hand side. Our 100ft sequoia tree is a good landmark.

FROM NEWCASTLE
From the ringroad take the A69 west, signed Corbridge, Hexham and Carlisle. About 6 miles past the Hexham exit take the A686 signed to Langley Castle and Alston. Follow the road through Whitfield and onto Alston. Lowbyer Manor is approx 200 metres past the 30mph speed restriction signs on the left hand side.

FROM THE WEST
Leave the M6 at Junction 40 (Penrith) and head east on the A66 towards Brough then follow the A686 to Alston over Hartside top. You'll enter Alston over the old stone bridge across the South Tyne river. Stay on this lower road, still the A686, now signposted to Hexham, and Lowbyer Manor is approximately half a mile out of Alston. Drive past the two garages on your left hand side, past the South Tynedale Preservation Steam Railway, round the sharp left hand bend and the Manor is the large white Georgian house set high in its own wooded grounds on the right hand side. Our 100ft sequoia tree is a good landmark.

FROM THE EAST
To get to us from the east (M1/A1) take the A66 at Scotch corner towards Barnard Castle. From Barnard Castle, follow the B6277 over the moors, through Middleton in Teesdale, past Garrigill into Alston. Follow the main street down the steep cobbled hill to the T-junction at the bottom. Turn right onto the A686 towards Hexham. Drive past the Texaco garage and the South Tynedale Preservation Steam Railway on the left, round the sharp left hand bend and the Manor is the large white Georgian house set high in its own wooded grounds on the right hand side. Our 100ft sequoia tree is a good landmark.

An alternative route from the east is to follow the A1(M) upto junction 58 and take the A68 west. A couple of miles after Witton le Wear take the A689 heading west. Follow this road and you will enter Alston at the top of town. Turn right and follow the main street down the steep cobbled hill to the T-junction at the bottom. Turn right onto the A686 towards Hexham.
