Blaenau Ffestiniog developed in the mid 19th century as a slate mining town and at the beginning of the 20th century, 4000 of the town's men were employed in the slate industry. The town has much to remind visitors of this Victorian enterprise and of old Welsh life, including the slate caverns and the Ffestiniog railway that was built to transport the slate to the harbour at Porthmadog. Today there is a lively community life in the town with clubs, societies, bands and male voice choirs.

Blaenau Ffestiniog is at the heart of an area unsurpassed in natural beauty and is the ideal base for touring the Snowdonia National Park by car, bicycle or on foot. Beaches, castles and many of North Wales's attractions are just a short drive or bus journey away.

The slate caverns provide a fascinating insight in to the world of the Victorian miner with an opportunity to take a guided tour on the miners' tramway or a deep mine tour. Then wander through the Victorian village, where pub and shops use specially minted Victorian coins.

The unique and world famous Ffestiniog narrow gauge steam railway runs along a 13½ mile line as it descends 700 feet through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round horseshoe bends and a complete spiral.

Enjoy the spectacular scenery as you drive on one of Snowdonia's highest roads on a visit to the Stwlam Dam and the Hydro centre. This area has some of the best rock climbing in Snowdonia. Fish for trout or savour the tranquillity and fresh air, walking one of the many walks in the mountains around Blaenau or along the vale of Ffestiniog.
