There is no better start to the day that sitting in our elegant Victorian dining room and sampling our delicious breakfast choice.
Begin with a steaming bowl of porridge made in the traditional scottish manner or a variety of fresh fruits or juices.
There are always freshly baked croissants,rolls muffins and bagels available, also a variety of cereals yogurts cheeses and cold meats.
Then after this taster throw yourself into the serious matter of choosing from our hot food buffet. Succulent sausages, crispy bacon, hash browns, beans, mushrooms and tomatoes then add some tasty haggis and black pudding. We will also cook you fresh organic eggs anyway you want them.
Wash all this down with either freshly brewed coffee or tea (decafinated or herbal available on request).
You still might have room for a slice of wholemeal toast with butter or preserves.
Nobody ever leaves our dining room hungry!
Location
We are situated a mile from the city centre on the south side of the city very near the university and Pollockhalls. There is an excellent bus service which takes you straight into town where you can wander up and down the Royal Mile explore the Castle or the Palace of Holyrood. If art galleries are more your thing there are plenty of them too within walking distance of the Royal Mile. However if it is our lively bars and clubs you are after coming home is never a problem as we are only a mile from most of them too.
Owner's Description
Barony House a warm and friendly guesthouse with spacious rooms with lovely high ceilings and old cornice work. Twoof our rooms have American style double beds for extra comfort and room.
All our rooms have a lovely seating area where you can plan all your activities in comfort. There are recommendations for nearby restaurants and trips to other parts of Scotland. We will always have someone on hand to plan these with you and if need be make the reservations.
If you are a lone traveller we do our utmost to make you feel welcome you will have all the extra room that a double room affords at a very reasonable tariff with single occupancy.
We provide a very extensive buffet style breakfast catering to all tastes but if there is something that would make your visit perfect and its not there, then all you have to do is ask. Special diets too are not a problem, just let us know what you would like provided and we will do our best.
We have free wireless broadband so if you are on business you can work in the comfort of your room however if you are just on holiday there is a computer for your use.
Although we do not have a licence you are welcome to bring your own "tipple". We will provide the correct glasses and even chill the bottle if required.
Things You Need To Know
Barony House is situated on a main road with one parking space which has to be reserved at time of booking. All our rooms have double glazing so there is very little outside noise. We also have ground floor rooms for those who dislike stairs and rooms overlooking the rear of the building.
Directions
From South M6/A74
From the A74 take the A702 at ABINGTON Services through BIGGAR which will bring you on to the A720 City Bypass. Go round both roundabouts and join the Bypass where signposted "Edinburgh South & East". Leave the Bypass at the first junction marked "Straiton Junction", join the A701 and follow the signs for City Centre. After 2.5 miles (4 km) bear left onto Craigmillar Park. Half a mile further on you will see "Barony House" on the left.
From South M1
Take the A68 from Scotch Corner, through Jedburgh and Dalkeith. After Dalkeith the road will merge with the A7 where you follow the City Centre signs. When nearing the City Centre you will approach a large roundabout under a rail bridge. Take the 2nd exit ("City Centre A701" "Newington") and then turn right onto Craigmillar Park. Half a mile further on you will see "Barony House" on the left.
ALTERNATIVELY: Take the A1 round the coastal route and join the A720 City Bypass as you approach the city. Leave the Bypass at the first junction (Sheriffhall Roundabout) and join the A7 signposted Edinburgh where it merges with the A68. Then as above.
From Glasgow
The M8 Motorway now terminates at a roundabout known as the "Edinburgh Interchange". On the roundabout take the third exit signposted "Edinburgh South & East" and join the A720 City Bypass. Continue on the bypass until Straiton junction, leave the bypass and join the A701 as for M6 traffic.
From North M90
Follow signs for City Centre, Princes Street, Berwick Upon Tweed A1 & East which will take you along Queen Street. Go right at the roundabout ("All other routes") and up Leith Street, keeping John Lewis on your right. Go straight on at the the traffic lights and left on to North Bridge, keeping the New Balmoral Hotel on your right. Continue straight on until the road becomes Minto Street then Mayfield Gardens. We are number 20, on the right.
ALTERNATIVELY: follow the signs for City Bypass and proceed as for Glasgow arrivals. (This route, although slightly longer, avoids all city confusion).
From Edinburgh Airport
Follow the A8 trunk road to the "Edinburgh Interchange". Follow signs for A720 Berwick and South then continue as above (from Glasgow).
By Rail
Exit from Waverley Station by road entrance turning right up on to Princes Street. Cross over to the shops side for buses numbered 3, 31, 69 or 80 travelling East. Bus will immediately turn right on to North Bridge. Travel along the main route until shops finish and Hotels/Guest Houses commence. Exit on Mayfield Gardens and we are over the road. Bus journeys should take around 10 minutes.
