Location

Borve Guest House is situated on a croft which is also home to Borve Castle, built by Amy MacRuairi, the first wife of John, Lord of the Isles, around 1350. At this time, the Lords of the Isles were at the height of their power and Clan Ranald, closely connected with the Lordship, had a strong presence in the area. Descendants of Clan Ranald lived in the castle until the 1715 Jacobite rising, when it was abandoned.

The three-storey high tower reached 30 feet and would originally have stood just off the shoreline on an islet; the coast of Benbecula has changed so much in the years since that it now sits much further inland on the machair. Although now in a dilapidated state, the remains of the five-foot thick walls are still in evidence, and the sense of power and defiance that it once represented remains.
