Places to visit while staying at a Bed and Breakfast in Derbyshire
The must-do thing during a trip to Derbyshire is to visit at least part of its amazing
countryside, the Peak District National Park. Almost three quarters of the park lies in
the county and a great deal of varying landscapes are on offer.
From caves to valleys there's plenty to see and you won't go far without seeing some of
the area's birds and wildlife or plants. It's a fact that the Derbyshire Dales have over
50 species of plants per square metre.
Scattered around the landscape are plenty of attractions for the whole family. One of
the most well-known country houses in the area is Chatsworth, just north of the town of
Bakewell. The house is home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and along with the
gardens, farmyard, gift shop and restaurant is open to the public and was recently seen in
the film Pride and Prejudice.
For nearby thrills try The American Adventure or Gulliver's theme parks both situated
in the county or Alton Towers, just over the Staffordshire border. Derby's biggest
sporting teams are Derby County Football Club The Rams who play at Pride
Park and there's also Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Fun by the water can be had at
either Carsington Reservoir or Ladybower Reservoir, where you could enjoy picnics, walking
or various sports.
Alternatively you could take a trip to one of Derbyshire's towns perhaps sample
a little Bakewell tart in Bakewell, see Chesterfield's famous `Crooked Spire', or visit
Buxton's opera house and gardens.
On a larger scale Derby, the county town, has plenty of shops, entertainment centres, a
cathedral and a handful of museums.
The warmer months are excellent times to visit the county and get out into some of its
countryside. Between May and September many of the towns and villages have welldressings,
where impressive pictures are made out of the natural growing flowers and leaves from
around the area. The Derbyshire county show usually takes place in June each year at the
Elvaston County Show Ground. Attractions include animal shows displays, vintage cars and
vehicles, crafts and a farmers market.
