Places to visit while staying at a Bed and Breakfast in Dorset
Located in the South-West of England, Dorset is a small gem of a county on the English
Channel Coast. Made up of many small villages and a few larger towns, its rural beauty is
unspoiled by unsightly city landscapes, leaving Dorset's rolling green hills and 90 miles
of breathtaking coastline for you to explore.
Dorset has a long history of human settlement dating back to 8000BC and some notable
archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill. Most of Dorset's
picturesque coastline was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001. This is hardly
surprising with its unique geographical landforms such as those at Lulworth Cove and
Durdle Door, which are definitely worth a visit.
Of course, Dorset is also famous for its holiday seaside resorts of Bournemouth,
Weymouth, Swanage and Lyme Regis to name a few. Teamed with good, safe beaches and the
fact that Dorset enjoys more annual sunshine than any other county, you can't visit the
area without allowing yourself a day to do nothing but kick back on the beach.
If you're looking for something a little more cultural than sandcastles and ice cream,
Dorset still has plenty to offer. For example, visit the two homes of author Thomas Hardy
in Dorset's county town, Dorchester, where such classics as Tess of the d'Urbervilles and
Jude the Obscure were written.
Old market towns like Blandford Forum and Shaftesbury will make you feel like you have
entered a time warp whilst a trip to Brownsea Island from Poole Harbour is an excellent
day out for nature enthusiasts. Just don't forget your binoculars!
Don't miss Dorset's regular annual events too, such as the Lyme Regis annual regatta and carnival in August, Swanage Railway's annual Diesel Day in November and the Dorset Flower Show in June. Check www.dorsetattractions.co.uk for an extensive list of activities and their dates.
After all that sight-seeing, you will have certainly worked up a hunger. You will be
surprised at the great variety of food, whether you fancy fish and chips or a curry, it's
all here.
One thing is for certain, if variety is important for you and your family, then Dorset
is the perfect break for you.
