About the Highlands and Skye

Self Catering Accommodation in the Highlands and Skye

Places to visit while staying at a holiday cottage in the Highlands and Skye

Inverness was granted its city status in 2000. It is the prosperous hub of the Highlands, with an enviable location on the banks of the River Ness at the head of the Great Glen, making it an ideal base for exploring.

The thriving city of Inverness is crowned by a pink castle, and lavishly decorated with flowers. There are plenty of shops, places to eat and drink, peaceful areas close to the centre for relaxing, and a good variety of places to stay. Chill out by the river at lovely Ness Islands; shop for something tartan to take home; and by night, go out on the town. The city itself is small, compact and easy to get around.

The surrounding shops are perfect for sending postcards back home, and buying a little something as a souvenir. Have a chat with the locals in the post office and butchers, and catch up on the gossip at the local put. Everyone is really friendly so you are sure to fit right in!

There are also many attractions around the city: re-live one of Scotland's most famous battles at Culloden battlefield; marvel at the spectacle of a Highland Games as Inverness hosts one of the world's biggest; and even see a school of dolphins play in the nearby Moray Firth. There is so mush to see and do, so give yourself more than a weekend and whatever you do, don’t forget the camera!
